Internet Marketing Grey Area and a lot of Black and White Hats

It is the age old battle. There are the forces of good struggle to wage war on the forces of evil. The good will only do what is honorable, just and honest in order to win. All the while the evil forces are willing to do whatever it takes, regardless of consequences, honesty or morality.

But is this really true when it comes to internet marketing? Are all white hat techniques good for you? Are all black hat techniques bad for you?

We all know the stereotypical good guys versus the bad guys. The good guy is always supposed to win, right? Unfortunately that truly only happens in the movies.

Lately I have been seeing a lot more products coming to market that may be considered black hat material. The concern is no longer as clear as black or white, but is now considerable much more of a grey area to even some long time marketers.

The truth of the matter is that not all black techniques were in fact always considered to be bad. Not to mention, no one really knows exactly what level of “black” can be a problem for you or your websites.

How many people can honestly say they have “never” entered one too many keywords into their website? Exactly how many is one too many? One, ten, or maybe fifty keywords? Who told you how many you can or cannot have listed? Did some search engine officially tell you that “you have too many keywords” or did they simply pull your site? The problem is they leave it up to you to “guess”.

To take this a step further, how come it seems that all of the black hat techniques work much better then white hat techniques? Well, because many of them simply are better at earning you money. However, the people who determine if a technique is considered to be black hat are the ones who are also the ones who make the most money, Yep Search engines.

Now, here lies the problem. If I make $100, and you “steal” $50 from me, I will get mad. But if I make $100, and you only “earn” $25, I will be happy. See that’s because I kept more profit. See nobody likes to pay out more then they have to. After all we are all in the business of making money.

Maybe you have been around for a while, decided that you could come up with your very own techniques for “beating the system”. But, see the search engines take their cue from Vegas. In Vegas card counting happens all the time. It is not truly considered illegal, IF, and only IF you can do it in your head. You cannot use any tools to help you.
However it will get you banned and blacklisted at just about ever casino worldwide. Heck, no one likes a cheat, even if you’re not cheating. But you see, the house makes the rules. Rule number one is that you are not supposed to have an advantage over the house,

It was not until the casinos realized that people could get the odds in their favor that this became considered a “black” practice. Even though only a few people could do it, they frowned upon it so heavily that it became unwritten law.

Now think of your favorite big brother search engine as the “internet granddaddy of all casinos”. If you do stuff that will piss them off, then you will likely get yourself pulled from the rankings. Your sites could go from generating thousands per day to non-existence in a day. Losing your income that quickly is too much like working a real job if you ask me. When you develop new tactics of winning at the Internet Marketing / Search engine Game, then you had better keep in mind that they may not like your methods.

It is not up to me to tell you one way or the other which techniques to use for promoting your website. You can pick and choose what tactics work best for you. Are there some that will get you banned, yes. Are there some that might get you banned, yes. Are there a few that are “black” that no one even things twice about using, Yes.

Take the time to learn which ones are which. Study what the white hat techniques are, and what the black ones are. Make an informed decision on how important your business is, and what any long term effects might be to any tactic you choose to use. Like any coin, you cannot have one side without the other. The coin itself is not good or bad, but how it is used determines the outcome.

The Right Steps When Hiring An SEO

I would like to think that most people are fairly honest when it comes to trying to help others. However, after being in business for several years, I have realized that this is not always true. Especially when it comes to technology. I have found that a lot of companies will take advantage of other companies who aren’t in the know. Ignorance is not bliss when you are in business for yourself. It is the equivalent of throwing money out the window.

One particular technology that has come into play recently is Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Although it has been around for a while, the science is consistently changing. In todays day and age, you can do your own SEO or pay someone to do it for you. I have always been a do-it-yourselfer at heart. However, not everyone is up for the challenge of learning SEO. That’s why there are people like me.

I teach individuals on how to optimize their site everyday. I have no interest in getting a consulting gig out of the training. My goal is to train my students on the steps that they need to take to get better rankings that convert. However, I have worked with many students who have been burned. They pay a lot of money to get their site optimized and nothing really happens. Most of the time it is a web development company that is doing the burning. They throw out acronyms and meta tags terms like it is going out of style. However, the customer is basically going to believe exactly what they say. After all, they are the expert, right? Wrong. most of the time web development shops are filled with programmers and usually pretty good ones at that. However, just because you are a good programmer doesn’t mean that you know anything about SEO. I have put together a list of some useful tips that will help you when engaging with an SEO.

Do your research before engaging with an SEO/ web development shop.

Know the process so that you can talk intelligently, and avoid scams. The biggest mistake that an SEO can make when engaging with you is not having a clearly defined plan. For instance, if an SEO says “email me a list of keywords, and I will do the research on them”, that is the 1st red flag. This means that they are relying on you to give them the keywords. I have taught enough people to know that newbies have no idea what good keywords are for their site.

Make sure that your SEO doesn’t rely on Black Hat tricks. Ask about the process that they will use. If it sounds shady, ask more questions. Shady techniques will hurt you more in the long run.

Talk with more than just one SEO. Make sure you have someone else to make a comparison. However, be careful of the salesman. He is slick and can make things sound really easy and great.

Take a class on SEO This is probably the best thing you can do to educate yourself on the process. I have often had people in my class that work with other SEO’s. They just want to understand what is going on from a higher level. Of course I would like you to attend my class, but there are also some others out there that provides exceptional training as well. Do yourself a favor and attend a seminar. If you pick a good one, you will be surprised about how easy SEO really is. This is the part where I plug my company. If you are interested in SEO training click below.

SEO Training from KnowledgeAir

The most important tip I can give you is keep yourself educated. Whether you do it through books, search or seminars. This technology changes consistently and in order to stay on top, you must constantly educate yourself.

Last but not least, make sure you get solid references. If you follow these simple little steps, you will be on your way.

The Road To Riches Through Search Marketing - SEO, PPC And Viral Marketing

The Internet has the ability to level the playing field between small and big business with regard to capturing market share. Search marketing - SEO, PPC and viral marketing is the most effective and least expensive method of driving traffic to a web site. Any type of business with a web site can participate.

Trends in Search Engine Marketing

North American advertisers spent US $9.4 billion on search engine marketing in 2006. This represented a 62% increase over the prior year and an 750% increase from 2002. The reason for this growth has to do with the explosive growth of the Internet worldwide - a trend that has impacted every industry in every developed country, producing billions of dollars in revenue for companies with a strong Internet presence.

Search Engine Marketing for Increasing Web Site Traffic

Search engine marketing (SEM) refers to listings and links to web sites that are produced on the pages of a search engine directory (like Google, Yahoo or MSN) when a keyword search term or phrase is entered. There are two types of results that are produced. Listings at the top and/or right column are sponsored results from advertisers who pay each time someone clicks on their ad and visits their web site. This is called pay-per-click (PPC) advertising. The largest SEM vendors for sponsored searching are Google AdWords, Yahoo! Search Marketing and Microsoft adCenter.

The second type of search results are the free organic listings that are produced because of content and code on the web site that match criteria determined by the search engines- essentially the search engines look for keywords, relevant content, meta tags, alt tags, back links and traffic flow. The process of getting web pages to match these criteria is called search engine optimization or SEO. The closer the site matches the search engine’s criteria, the better the ranking order for that web site. If a web site is not found on the first or second page of search results, it is unlikely to be found and result in traffic. Any number of pages on a web site may be optimized and found through the search engines. There are hundreds to thousands of search engines. The majority of searches however come through Google, Yahoo and MSN. Each search engine uses different rules or algorithms for determining ranking order. These rules can and often do change over time. That is why it is an ongoing process to achieve and maintain a good page rank with SEO. When SEO includes a presence in forums, blogs, social networks, and multimedia directories, the result is viral marketing - this is where traffic and results get very exciting!

Best Results Through SEO and Viral Marketing

A good SEO program will not just produce a high page rank for keywords, it will also drive traffic from a particular target market to web site pages from many different sources. These may include links from relevant web sites valued by the search engines, forums, blogs, social networks, multimedia directories and online press releases. The sum total of all of this marketing produces a viral effect resulting in high search engine rankings and explosive web site traffic.

17 critical components for SEO with viral marketing results:

1. Keyword research and analysis to determine keywords that are searched in significant numbers and relevant to the web site’s target market.

2. Incorporating an XML site map so that search engines can crawl the web site easily.

3. Incorporation of informative content-rich web pages to the existing web site based on targeted keywords.

4. Defining keyword-rich Titles and Meta tags for each and every page of the web site in order to make every page search engine friendly.

5. Hand submitting the web site to niche directories to get valuable one way links.

6. Writing and developing keyword-rich articles focused on targeted keywords.

7. Creating a blog for the web site and submitting it to blog directories and blog search engines.

8. Submitting articles to leading E-zines and other informative sites to get one way links along with relevant traffic towards the web site.

9. Exchanging links with other relevant web sites to increase back links for the web site.

10. Participating in niche Blogs & Forums to get quality back links and traffic.

11. Creating a presence in Social Book marking sites.

12. Creating a presence in Social Networking sites.

13. Participating in Video Sharing using video that showcases the web site’s mission, purpose, brand and unique selling position.

14. RSS feed creation and submission to various RSS directories.

15. Press release creation and submission.

16. Including powerful and effective marketing copy in all content developed for the SEO and viral marketing program.

17. Tracking of results and making modifications based on traffic patterns, lead generation results and sales conversion data.

A plain vanilla SEO program that optimizes web pages will produce limited results. I have personally seen companies charge big bucks and stuff keywords into pages that no human being would read. They may get attention from the search engines but people will be off that site in a heartbeat. The bottom line is effective marketing copy in everything that is produced for the project.

Most SEO companies do not include many of these viral marketing concepts in their program. Using this list of criteria when shopping around for a company to do your SEO will help you to get the most value for the money you spend. Done well and responsibly managed, SEO and viral marketing can be your most productive marketing investment.

SEO Careers - Breaking in as an SEO Professional

Search engine optimization is essential in today’s competitive internet marketplace and the demand for SEO professionals has never been greater. From freelance opportunities to positions within established web design and development companies, lucrative SEO careers are within anyone’s reach. As a search engine specialist at my company, here are a few characteristics and skill sets I would be looking for in a new employee.

Be Willing to Learn

Search is changing every day. What works well today may not work at all tomorrow and may get a client site penalized next month. It’s vital that anyone thinking about SEO careers be ready, willing, and eager to stay on top of new developments at Google, Yahoo!, Windows Live, and Ask.com. Any potential employer will expect you to know the latest news about the industry so make sure to study up before attending any interview.

Write Well

Much of search engine optimization today comes down to copywriting. You’ll need to write web page copy, press releases, case studies, newsletters, and blog posts. You certainly don’t have to have an English degree but writing is part of this business and you should both enjoy it and be willing to do it on a daily basis.

Be Creative and Inquisitive

What I love about search engine optimization is it provides the opportunity for almost endless creativity. You’ll be researching and analyzing keywords, brainstorming linking tactics, running pay per click campaigns, investigating your client’s industry and competition online, and many other “detective work” type tasks. If you don’t like digging in, investigating, testing, and discovering how best to rank your client’s web pages then an SEO career isn’t for you.

Be Proactive

The reality of this business is that very few of the people you’re going to be working with will understand how SEO works or be able to offer you much guidance as you optimize a site. This is especially true if you’re looking to start your own SEO company where you absolutely must be a self-starter to succeed. But, it’s also true if you’re looking to get hired in somewhere as well. I would want an employee of mine to take an SEO assignment and be able to carry it out with little or no input from me. After all, if I wanted to do it myself I wouldn’t have hired you!

Don’t Let Lack of a Degree Hold You Back

One of the great things about the web design and development industry is that results and work product count more than education. While having an associates or bachelors degree certainly can’t hurt, your ability to educate yourself to understand and perform search engine optimization work is much more important for your SEO career than a degree.

The truth is that I’m self-educated in SEO and I would be more willing to hire someone who is self-educated over someone with a college degree all things being equal. After all, much of this job is self-motivated self-education and developing the necessary SEO skills without attending a university where you’re spoon fed the information says a lot about your potential for success in this field.

If you you’re just getting started in your SEO career and need that education, take a look at SEO Book. It’s the industry standard resource for new and veteran search engine professionals alike.

In fact, if you ever interview with me for a search engine optimization position, you can expect a few questions to come straight from these pages.

ABC On Getting Your Wisconsin Site To Score High - Part 3

The objective of this article is to give you a basic understanding on how basic engine optimization for ranking high in the search results for Wisconsin related keyword phrases can be achieved.

In other words, what we will cover is how you can boost the ranking for your Wisconsin related site in the top search engines by getting your on-page factors fairly right.

We will also assume that you have your list of keywords that you want to rank high for ready. And also remember to only target one keyword phrase per article you write.

Ready?

When working on improvements in your search engine ranking you should always put the main keyword that you target in the page’s title and description tag.

For the body text you want the keyword phrase inside the title and in the first paragraph on the page. Throughout the rest of your body text, the main keyword phrase should be used every now and then.

Don’t care about writing with a fixed keyword density since that formula change over time.

The content you create by using these basic search engine optimization rules for ranking high in search engines for Wisconsin phrases must be of high quality and useful to your visitors.

Always remember, useful content will be king in the future.

Back in the days when Internet was fairly new to the general public, many webmasters tried to fool the top search engines by writing spammy pages and by adding a ton of unrelated keywords to the keyword metatags.

Today we can all thank God for the fact that the search engines have gotten smarter and a side effect is that the Internet has become a better and more informational place for all.

The Role of the Robots.txt File to Improve Site Ranking!

Not many web master take the time to use a robots.txt file for their website. For search engine spiders that use the robots.txt to see what directories to search through, the robots.txt file can be very helpful in keeping the spiders indexing your actual pages and not other information, such as looking through your stats!

The robots.txt file is useful in keeping your spiders from accessing parts folders and files in your hosting directory that are totally unrelated to your actual web site content. You can choose to have the spiders kept out of areas that contain programming that search engines cannot parse properly, and to keep them out of the web stats portion of your site.

Many search engines cannot view dynamically generated content properly, mainly created by programming languages, such as PHP or ASP. If you have an online store programmed in your hosting account, and it is in a seperate directory, you would be wise to block out the spiders from this directory so it only finds relevant information.

The robots.txt file should be placed in the directory where your main files for your hosting are located. So you would be advised to create a blank text file, and save it as robots.txt, and then upload it to your web hosting to the same directory your index.htm file is located.

Here is examples of the use of the robots.txt file:

To block out a directory in a robots.txt file, such as a subdirectory for your online store called /store/ you would do the following:
Disallow: /store/

Another example to block out your stats directory:
Disallow: /stats/

You may also want to disallow individual files that you do not want searched by the search engines. For example you dont want search.php to be parsed by the Search Engines. To do this you type in the following on its own line:

Disallow: /search.php

Following the rules outlined and creating the robots.txt file, you will keep search engine spiders out of unwanted files and directories, and letting them go through the important files to see what your web site is all about!

3 Profitable Tips To Boost Your Blog Up The Search Engine Rankings

Blogs are simply one of the best kind of websites for shooting up the search engine rankings? Why? Because they use “authority” platforms like Wordpress or Blogger which are recognized by the search engines. Bloggers also constantly add content, which search engines like.

So how do you get your blog up to the top of the search engines? Here’s 3 actionable tips you can start using immediately:

1. Include your keywords in your title, description, and metatags

This is especially important if you are using a Wordpress blog. Wordpress allows you to edit these facets, giving your blog better search engine optimization capabilities. You can download plugins which make it easy to insert your title, description and metatags. Simply do a search for “SEO Wordpress plugins” on Google.

2. Get tons of incoming links

Incoming links are one of the most important factors in search engine optimization. You need to have links pointing back to your blog to achieve a high search engine ranking. One way to get tons of incoming links is by posting comments on other blogs.

3. Post your blog to directories on the Internet

Submit your blog to blog directories like Technorati and website directories like Dmoz. If your blog targets a certain niche, you can also search for niche directories on the Internet to submit to. Do a search for “your niche + directories” on Google to uncover these directories quickly and easily.

There you have it, 3 profitable ways to increase your search engine rankings! Go use them today to increase your income.

Choosing a Reputable SEO Firm

Choosing a reputable SEO Firm can be daunting, with so little knowledge available on what to look for. So the goal of this article is to give you the three key scams to watch out for, when searching for a reputable SEO Firm:

SEO WANNA-BE’S

Search engine optimization is one of those unknown fields that has no established standards. Anyone can say they are an SEO or can do SEO work, but that does not mean they have the talent, time or tools to produce any results. There are also programs that claim to help search engine ranking. They do not work either. Period.

An easy way to spot an unknowledgeable SEO or a web designer who poses as an SEO is to ask them if they optimized your site when they designed it. They will answer, “Oh yeah, I optimized it.”

That is equivalent to saying, “Oh yeah, I’ve been worked out.” Working out and SEO are never one time events. They are always on-going projects.

SEO SUBMISSION SCAMS

A lot of companies will also call people and tell them that they will submit their sites to 2000 directories, which will build their search engine ranking. It is a form of link campaigning–albeit lopsided and one-dimensional. The problem with these “auto-submissions” is that the directories to which they are submitting have safe-guards in place to reject these kinds of mass submissions. Now, here is the scam: the company has technically done what they promised they would do, SUBMIT your site, even though 99% of those submissions will be rejected and thus be of no use to building a client’s search engine ranking.

SEO KEYWORD SCAMS

Another prevalent scam in the industry is for SEOs to try to gull you into letting them pick the phrases to dominate. For instance, say you are real estate agent and your website is: www.MollyLynnMorganRealEstate.com

A scam SEO will come to you and say, “We can get you a #1 ranking for ‘Molly Lynn Morgan Real Estate.” They can probably do that for you. Unfortunately, none of your potential clients are going to Google and typing in that phrase.

More sophisticated SEOs will come to you and tell you, “I will try to get you the ranking ‘Real Estate in Middle Tennessee.’” That sounds like a wonderful phrase to dominate, but their data has told them that no legitimate SEOs are going after that phrase; because, again, while it might sound good, very few people are actually typing that in. People are actually most often using either ‘Nashville Real Estate’ or ‘Nashville Tennessee Real Estate.’

What a legitimate SEO will do (like we do here at Nashville SEO Info) is to show you the actual data. We will show you the exact numbers of how many people per month are searching for the product or services you offer and what exact keyphrases they are typing in. We won’t go after any of the silly phrases above. We will show you the data AND LET YOU CHOOSE!

Strategic Role of the Keyword in Successful on Page Search Engine Optimization

Most webmasters know that to increase the organic search results of a website, you have to adopt successful Off Page and On Page Search Engine Optimization strategies. Here we shall consider On Page Search Engine Optimization strategies and the vital role Keyword plays to increase your website ranking on search engine results pages.

Single keywords are highly competitive today; hence it is advisable and easier to optimize for a keyword phrase rather than a single keyword. In this manner you stand a chance of ranking higher in the search engine results. How and where you place the keywords or keyword phrase can make all the difference between success and failure.

1. Page’s Title Tag:
It is very important that you have your keyword or keyword phrase in the title tag. It will be even better if you can make it the first word or phrase in the title.

2. Description Tag:

It is also necessary to insert your keyword or keyword phrase in the Description tag at least once.

3. Meta Tag:
Google and some of the major search engines no longer consider this important; nevertheless there are some search engines that do place importance to this. No harm will be done by including your main keywords here and reap the rewards from these search engines too.

4. Keywords in your H tags:
You should ensure that your specific keywords appear in a headline H1 tag in your page since search engines are on the look out for such tags. This is the code used to display your headline in large type. This tag should be used only once and should be at the top of the page.
Having sub titles by including your keywords in them and using H2 and H3 tags once each will also be very effective and attract the search engines.

5. Bold Text or Italicized Text:
Since search engines give more consideration for bolded and italicized text compared to regular or normal text, it will be advantageous to have your keywords in bold or italicized text once or twice in the page. Don’t do it in excess since Google can construe it as Black Hat tactics and penalize you.

6. In the Content:
Content is King and the Keywords in your content certainly takes pride of place. Place your keyword or keyword phrase within the first two lines of your content and at the bottom of your web page. This clearly indicates to the search engine what your website is all about. You should of course place your keywords judiciously right throughout the content so that there is a natural flow in the content. Do not stuff your content with keywords. Search Engines can penalize you for keyword stuffing. About 3%-5% of the text will be considered as reasonable.

7. Use Alt on Images with Keywords:
Search engines cannot read images; hence it is important to ensure that you use alt text for every image on your web page. Include your keyword in the text. This helps the search engine to know what the image is about and also helps the speech synthesizers for the blind.

8. In URL:
If your website is up and running with a designated URL, you will not be able to make any changes. But it is important that you give serious thought when you choose the Domain Name for your website at the initial stage itself. It is advantageous to have your prime keyword or words in the URL and preferably at the beginning of the URL.

Conclusion:
It is not everyone who can optimize a web page. It certainly needs skills, effort and patience but it can be done by webmasters themselves. On page search engine optimization is absolutely necessary to reap the benefits of having a website.

Seach Engine Marketing - How To Get A Top-10 Search Engine Position Spending Just 2 Hours!

The success or failure of your search engine marketing depends upon getting good rankings in the search engines. Preferably, you’d want to enter the Top 10 for a well-searched keyword in your market. If you want to do that by spending just 2 hours instead of slaving away for a week or two, here is what you need to do:

Step 1 - Bookmark Your Site!

Social bookmarking can be a quick way to get quality backlinks out there pointing back to your site. These are links from authority sites that are highly regarded by the search engines. Some places to bookmark your site include Digg and del.icio.us.

Step 2 - Start Posting In Forums

Foruming is an instant tactic to get incoming links. By creating a signature box that has a link back to your website, you have the potential to create new backlinks everytime you make a new post. Start finding popular forums related to your market and start posting on them.

Step 3 - Submit Articles To Article Directories

Article directories, especially the more popular ones, are often regarded as authority sites themselves by the search engines. Every article you submit can contain a few links pointing to your site. Some article directories allow you to link in the article itself, most will allow you to post a link in the article resource box.

As you can see, off-site search engine optimization is pretty straightforward. It is all about getting as many quality backlinks as you can. And the above methods are some of the most effective and fastest ways to achieve that!
